Passive or active solution: definitions
A passive solution keeps products within a precise temperature range without any electrical energy. It absorbs or moderates heat using PCM, ice or insulated structures, and thereby protects product integrity during transport or storage.
An active solution keeps the temperature within the required range using powered mechanical or refrigeration systems. It removes heat through compressors, fans and other motorized devices.
| Criterion | Passive | Active |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | None (PCM, insulation) | Electricity or batteries |
| Mechanical parts | None | Compressor, fans, electronics |
| Implementation | Simple assembly, no technical installation | Installation, recharging, maintenance |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Risk of failure | Very low | Mechanical or electrical failure possible |
The 5 advantages of reusable passive packaging
- No energy required. It holds temperatures without electricity or batteries.
- A reliable system. With no mechanical parts, nothing can fail along the way.
- Easy to use and transport. It needs no technical installation or maintenance.
- Lower cost. It is cheaper than active temperature-controlled systems.
- Sustainable. Being reusable, it reduces the carbon footprint of pharmaceutical transport, under three conditions: it is lightweight, it has a high reuse rate, and it can be repositioned.
A concrete example: the EMBALL'ISO High Performance Pallet Shipper range
The EMBALL'ISO range covers three temperature ranges, shipped door-to-door on all lanes.
| Range | Temperature range |
|---|---|
| Cool | +2 °C / +8 °C |
| Temperate | +15 °C / +25 °C |
| Freeze | -15 °C / -25 °C |
Main features
- Performance of up to 144 hours, according to the ISTA 7D profile.
- Flatpack shipment and storage, assembled in 3 minutes, lightweight.
- Two conditioning modes: briquette preconditioning, or ready-to-use delivery.
- External loggers to trace temperature.
- Reusable, with collection in more than 80 countries.
- Repositioning by sea freight when necessary.
- Up to 91% lower CO₂ emissions each time it is reused.
When active solutions remain relevant
Active solutions can be suitable for very long durations, extreme environments or very large volumes. For the majority of pharmaceutical shipments, with appropriate qualification, reusable passive packaging offers the best balance between reliability, cost and carbon impact.
Frequently asked questions
Can a passive packaging guarantee +2 °C / +8 °C for several days?
Yes. Qualified passive pallet shippers hold temperature for up to 144 hours according to the ISTA 7D profile.
Is passive more environmentally friendly than active?
Yes, if it is lightweight, heavily reused and repositionable. It uses no energy during transport, and each reuse avoids up to 91% of CO₂ emissions.
Is a passive packaging more reliable?
It has no mechanical parts that can fail, which removes an entire category of risk.
How does packaging repositioning work?
Packagings are collected in more than 80 countries. When repositioning is necessary, it is done by sea freight, which emits less.
